IIT Madras

The Indian Institute of Chennai (IIT Madras) is one of the finest engineering institutes in India. It is considered today as one of the pioneers of educational institutions operating in the country. Founding Stones for IIT Madras

The agreement to set up IIT Madras was signed in the year 1959. The agreement was signed between the government of India and the German government with the aim of establishing an institution that would provide high standard engineering and technical knowledge education. The formal inauguration of the institution took place in the year 1959 and was presided over by the then Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs, Professor Humayun Kabir.
IIT Madras was the former name of IIT Chennai. It was later changed to its current form when the city name was changed from Madras to Chennai in the year 1996. Ever since it was first established, IIT Madras has been working hard to become one of the main centers that provides unparalleled quality education.
Today, IIT Madras has also made a name for itself on the global scenario and is counted in some of the top engineering colleges in India. IIT Madras has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with several global institutions. The aim of extending its global reach is to provide a platform for its students where they can work on cooperative projects and assignments alongside their global counterparts
Admissions at IIT Madras


Students who wish to apply for the B.Tech courses offered by the institute have to sit for the Joint Entrance Examination which is the common admission test for all IITs in the country. The joint entrance test is conducted in the month of April every year.

Those who wish to seek admission for the postgraduate programs in engineering, technology, architecture and pharmacy have to sit for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). GATE is an all India level test.

Students who wish to apply for the management programs in IIT Madras have to sit for the Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET). JMET is the common exam that is conducted for admission to the management courses of all IIT's and IISc.

But students also have to apply separately to each institute for admission. For admission to various MSC postgraduate programs and and 3-year post B.Sc programs, prospective students need to sit for the Joint Admission Test (JAM)
